History

Muito Real is a Portuguese catchphrase meaning "So Real" or "Very Real" that Shin Megami Tensei fans yell to express over-the-top hype. It was popularized by the @SMTPortugal Twitter account and exploded in June 2021 around the Mothman reveal for Shin Megami Tensei V.

Origin

The first "muito real" post came from @SMTPortugal on June 1, 2018, in a tweet about Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey that described the game as "very fucking real" alongside official art (translated from Portuguese)[1]. Through 2020 the account kept dropping the phrase into meme posts, and it turned into an in-joke among the page's Portuguese-speaking followers before any wider spread[3].

Overview

Muito Real is a Portuguese catchphrase, literally "So Real" or "Very Real" (translated from Portuguese), used by Shin Megami Tensei fans as an exaggerated shout of excitement[1]. The phrase is tied closely to Mothman, the armless half-man half-moth demon with a stunned face revealed for Shin Megami Tensei V in June 2021[3].

The joke was popularized by @SMTPortugal, a Portuguese fan page for the Atlus RPG series, and spread through replies, quote tweets, and reaction images inside the SMT fandom[1]. Some fans now use "muito real" as an alternate name for Mothman himself, even though that was not what the phrase originally meant[3].

How It Spread

On June 16, 2021, Atlus teased a Mothman silhouette at a Shin Megami Tensei V conference, and @SMTPortugal replied with "MUITO REAL AAAAAAAAAA," pulling in more than 1,000 likes over the next two weeks[1]. When @megaten_atlus posted on June 29, 2021 that a new demon would be unveiled the next day using the same silhouette, the tweet's replies filled with SMT fans shouting "muito real" in anticipation[2].

Atlus dropped the official Mothman reveal trailer on June 30, 2021, and by that point the phrase was already all over the reply section of every SMT-related post[3]. A meme by @SMTPortugal riffing on its own popularity that day pulled in over 1,300 likes and 200 retweets within a day[1].

Within days the catchphrase jumped past Portuguese Twitter. French SMT fan account @SMTSAVOUE [4] posted a video showing how completely SMTPortugal had taken over Atlus's announcement replies, picking up more than 300 likes in a day. Other localized SMT fan pages started asking what "muito real" meant and adopting it themselves.

How to Use

Fans typically reply "muito real," often stretched out as "MUITO REAL AAAAAAAAAA," to any Shin Megami Tensei news, Mothman sighting, or general SMT hype moment[3]. It works as unfiltered excitement rather than commentary on the news itself, and is sometimes used as a stand-in name for Mothman[3].
