Overview
"I Understood The Assignment" is a catchphrase pulled from a 2021 track by Texas rapper Tay Money, used online whenever someone wants to show they crushed a task, look, workout, or bit[1]. The audio caught fire on TikTok, where creators paired the hook with glow-ups, transformation edits, and playful skits[2].
The phrase picked up a political second life in July 2024 when Kamala Harris supporters started using the slightly reworded "I Understand The Assignment" as a rallying hashtag during the U.S. presidential race[3].
How It Spread
TikTok users grabbed the sound almost immediately. On August 26, 2021, creator MattiaKrappa posted a bit about opening a Harry Styles themed cafe using the audio, which pulled about 630,000 likes[2]. A week later, on September 3, 2021, TikToker Chatyah.Burroughs used the same clip to soundtrack her weight loss journey, and that video hit around 5 million views in a month[2].
Tay Money dropped the official music video on YouTube on October 8, 2021, and it pulled over 800,000 views in under two weeks[1]. Within four months of the teaser, the audio had reportedly been used in more than 640,000 TikToks[3].
The catchphrase got a political revival in late July 2024 after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris. On July 22, 2024, X user @libradunn tweeted "We understand the assignment!" and racked up more than 11,000 likes and 2,300 reposts inside two days[4]. The next day, Threads user @melissahilfers asked about the phrase's meaning, sparking a reply from @marsharumbarger about following the lead of Black women in the party[5].
How to Use
People typically drop the audio or the phrase over a proud reveal, before/after edit, or a straight-up flex. Common conventions include a slow-motion strut, an outfit or makeup reveal, a workout progress cut, or footage of someone nailing a dance, dish, or skill. In the 2024 political version, supporters often paired the line with campaign or endorsement posts instead of personal glow-ups[4].
