The film sparked a national debate about racial stereotyping, pulled a dismissive response from The Simpsons itself, and prompted viral Twitter threads from Desi Americans sharing their own family stories.","tags":["the problem with apu","hari kondabolu","apu nahasapeemapetilon","the simpsons apu controversy","hank azaria","south asian representation","truTV documentary"],"howToUse":[],"imageCount":9,"nsfw":false,"images":[{"url":"https://fcdtoybbbn2ccxbp.public.blob.vercel-storage.com/images/the-problem-with-apu/the-problem-with-apu-the-problem-with-apu-title.webp","caption":"Title graphic for Hari Kondabolu's 2017 documentary 'The Problem with Apu,' which sparked widespread discussion of the Simpsons character's stereotypical depiction.","width":780,"height":436,"nsfw":true},{"url":"https://fcdtoybbbn2ccxbp.public.blob.vercel-storage.com/images/the-problem-with-apu/the-problem-with-apu-travlersdepot-twitter-response.webp","caption":"A tweet reacting to The Simpsons' on-screen response to the Apu controversy, voicing disappointment with the show's 'meh' answer.","width":489,"height":594,"nsfw":false},{"url":"https://fcdtoybbbn2ccxbp.public.blob.vercel-storage.com/images/the-problem-with-apu/the-problem-with-apu-cool-parents-vintage-photo-tweet.webp","caption":"Continuation of Amar Shah's thread celebrating his immigrant parents, which went viral during the #ProblemWithApu discourse.","width":680,"height":620,"nsfw":false},{"url":"https://fcdtoybbbn2ccxbp.public.blob.vercel-storage.com/images/the-problem-with-apu/the-problem-with-apu-parents-today-photo-tweet.webp","caption":"A present-day photo of Amar Shah's parents, closing out his viral thread countering the Apu stereotype with real immigrant stories.","width":680,"height":722,"nsfw":false},{"url":"https://fcdtoybbbn2ccxbp.public.blob.vercel-storage.com/images/the-problem-with-apu/the-problem-with-apu-kondabolu-replies-desi-stories.webp","caption":"Hari Kondabolu responds to Amar Shah's viral thread, acknowledging that interviews with Desi small business owners were left on the cutting room floor of his documentary.","width":680,"height":532,"nsfw":false},{"url":"https://fcdtoybbbn2ccxbp.public.blob.vercel-storage.com/images/the-problem-with-apu/the-problem-with-apu-kondabolu-south-park-reaction.webp","caption":"Hari Kondabolu reacts in disbelief to South Park appearing to support his critique of Apu, using the hashtags #CancelTheSimpsons and #PleaseDontThough.","width":1200,"height":675,"nsfw":false},{"url":"https://fcdtoybbbn2ccxbp.public.blob.vercel-storage.com/images/the-problem-with-apu/the-problem-with-apu-social-01.webp","caption":"The Problem With Apu","width":1200,"height":675,"nsfw":false},{"url":"https://fcdtoybbbn2ccxbp.public.blob.vercel-storage.com/images/the-problem-with-apu/the-problem-with-apu-social-02.webp","caption":"The Problem With Apu","width":960,"height":738,"nsfw":false},{"url":"https://fcdtoybbbn2ccxbp.public.blob.vercel-storage.com/images/the-problem-with-apu/the-problem-with-apu-social-03.webp","caption":"The Problem With Apu","width":900,"height":1200,"nsfw":false}],"historyUrl":"https://fcdtoybbbn2ccxbp.public.blob.vercel-storage.com/images/the-problem-with-apu/history.md","related":["llddis-broke-ass-niggas-tiktok","katy-perry-blackface-shoes-controversy","gucci-blackface-balaclava-controversy","facial-recognition-software","bud-light-dylan-mulvaney","asians-in-the-library","milhouse","steamed-hams","have-the-rolling-stones-killed","the-simpsons-did-it","am-i-out-of-touch","barf-simmons-barf-symptons"],"popularityRank":2789,"license":"Meme images and history: templates, screenshots, photos and fan edits, many of copyrighted material or real people.
