{"id":"raised-fist","name":"Raised Fist","summary":"Raised Fist is a 1917 political gesture first illustrated by Ralph Chaplin for the IWW, depicting a clenched hand held upward, which became a ubiquitous emoji and protest symbol.","tags":[],"howToUse":["**Physical gesture:** Raise a clenched fist above head height, typically at protests, rallies, or moments of solidarity. The right fist is most common, though left-fist variants exist (John Carlos raised his left hand at the 1968 Olympics because he was wearing Smith's spare left-handed glove[6]).","**Emoji usage:** The ✊ emoji (and its skin-tone variants) is typically used in social media posts to signal solidarity with a cause, especially in contexts related to social justice, labor rights, or political resistance.","**Profile picture:** During protest movements, users often change their social media avatar to a raised fist graphic, as seen during the 2020 TikTok Blackout[8].","**Graphic design:** The fist is commonly combined with other symbols to create movement-specific logos. A fist inside a Venus symbol signals feminism. A fist holding a rose is used by socialist and social democratic parties[12]. A fist incorporating a geographic outline (like the 2011 Wisconsin union fist) signals regional solidarity[12]."],"imageCount":12,"nsfw":false,"images":[{"url":"https://fcdtoybbbn2ccxbp.public.blob.vercel-storage.com/images/raised-fist/raised-fist-canonical-silhouette.webp","caption":"The canonical raised fist symbol widely used across empowerment and justice movements.","width":800,"height":450,"nsfw":true},{"url":"https://fcdtoybbbn2ccxbp.public.blob.vercel-storage.com/images/raised-fist/raised-fist-pride-flag-intersectional.webp","caption":"Intersectional solidarity design combining raised fist with inclusive Pride imagery.","width":680,"height":680,"nsfw":true},{"url":"https://fcdtoybbbn2ccxbp.public.blob.vercel-storage.com/images/raised-fist/raised-fist-protest-poster.webp","caption":"Activist protest poster using raised fist as unifying symbol for multiple grievances.","width":224,"height":360,"nsfw":false},{"url":"https://fcdtoybbbn2ccxbp.public.blob.vercel-storage.com/images/raised-fist/raised-fist-stern-uncensored.webp","caption":"Commercial appropriation of power fist symbol conveying rebellion and freedom.","width":311,"height":360,"nsfw":true},{"url":"https://fcdtoybbbn2ccxbp.public.blob.vercel-storage.com/images/raised-fist/raised-fist-silhouette-emoji.webp","caption":"Comparison showing raised fist symbol's transition from graphic to emoji form.","width":600,"height":628,"nsfw":true},{"url":"https://fcdtoybbbn2ccxbp.public.blob.vercel-storage.com/images/raised-fist/raised-fist-peace-symbol-campaign.webp","caption":"1960s-70s political campaign poster fusing anti-war and empowerment imagery.","width":293,"height":432,"nsfw":false},{"url":"https://fcdtoybbbn2ccxbp.public.blob.vercel-storage.com/images/raised-fist/raised-fist-1917-chaplin-origin.webp","caption":"The 1917 Ralph Chaplin illustration widely cited as the origin of the Raised Fist symbol.","width":500,"height":428,"nsfw":false},{"url":"https://fcdtoybbbn2ccxbp.public.blob.vercel-storage.com/images/raised-fist/raised-fist-1968-olympics-protest.webp","caption":"Historic 1968 Olympics Black Power salute protest with raised fists.","width":640,"height":896,"nsfw":false},{"url":"https://fcdtoybbbn2ccxbp.public.blob.vercel-storage.com/images/raised-fist/raised-fist-el-popular-1918.webp","caption":"1918 El Popular Mexican newspaper front page showcasing early international spread of the symbol.","width":272,"height":360,"nsfw":false},{"url":"https://fcdtoybbbn2ccxbp.public.blob.vercel-storage.com/images/raised-fist/raised-fist-metallic-sculpture.webp","caption":"Large-scale metallic raised fist sculpture as civic public art installation.","width":450,"height":600,"nsfw":false},{"url":"https://fcdtoybbbn2ccxbp.public.blob.vercel-storage.com/images/raised-fist/raised-fist-axis-of-justice-album.webp","caption":"","width":null,"height":null,"nsfw":false},{"url":"https://fcdtoybbbn2ccxbp.public.blob.vercel-storage.com/images/raised-fist/raised-fist-feminist-symbol.webp","caption":"","width":null,"height":null,"nsfw":false}],"historyUrl":"https://fcdtoybbbn2ccxbp.public.blob.vercel-storage.com/images/raised-fist/history.md","related":["hands-up-dont-shoot","milkshaking","safetypin-safety-pin-movement","2017-catalan-independence-referendum","2019-venezuelan-presidential-crisis","antifa","black-lives-matter","gay-clown-putin","guy-fawkes-mask","iraqi-shoe-toss","jug-of-justice-bonk-the-police","net-neutrality"],"popularityRank":633,"license":"Meme images and history: templates, screenshots, photos and fan edits, many of copyrighted material or real people.
