{"id":"people-die-if-they-are-killed","name":"People Die If They Are Killed","summary":"People Die If They Are Killed is a catchphrase pulled from an awkward English subtitle in the 2006 anime Fate/Stay Night by studio Deen. Uttered with total sincerity by protagonist Shirou Emiya, the tautological line became a running joke on 4chan's /a/ board and anime image sites, mocked for years as the go-to example of a sentence that says nothing. The clip spawned one of the earliest anime translation memes and is still trotted out to call out the painfully obvious.","tags":["people die if they are killed","fate stay night meme","shirou emiya quote","anime translation meme","4chan /a/ catchphrase","studio deen fate","holy grail episode"],"howToUse":[],"imageCount":4,"nsfw":false,"images":[{"url":"https://fcdtoybbbn2ccxbp.public.blob.vercel-storage.com/images/people-die-if-they-are-killed/people-die-if-they-are-killed-saber-visual-novel-dialogue.webp","caption":"Screenshot from the Fate/stay night visual novel showing the original context of Shirou's tautological line, delivered here through Saber's internal reflection.","width":680,"height":502,"nsfw":false},{"url":"https://fcdtoybbbn2ccxbp.public.blob.vercel-storage.com/images/people-die-if-they-are-killed/people-die-if-they-are-killed-o-rly-demotivator-remix.webp","caption":"An early demotivator remix pairing the Fate/stay night line with the classic 'O RLY?' internet joke to highlight its absurdity.","width":680,"height":544,"nsfw":false},{"url":"https://fcdtoybbbn2ccxbp.public.blob.vercel-storage.com/images/people-die-if-they-are-killed/people-die-if-they-are-killed-genius-demotivator-poster.webp","caption":"Sarcastic demotivator poster that helped popularize the meme by ridiculing the redundant statement.","width":604,"height":483,"nsfw":false},{"url":"https://fcdtoybbbn2ccxbp.public.blob.vercel-storage.com/images/people-die-if-they-are-killed/people-die-if-they-are-killed-rin-tohsaka-motivator.webp","caption":"Motivator remix featuring Rin Tohsaka delivering a variant of the line, showing how the meme spread across Fate/stay night characters.","width":608,"height":483,"nsfw":false}],"historyUrl":"https://fcdtoybbbn2ccxbp.public.blob.vercel-storage.com/images/people-die-if-they-are-killed/history.md","related":["xzibit-yo-dawg","jojo-references","its-over-9000","is-that-jojo-reference","cool-story-bro","peak-fiction","is-this-a-pigeon","anime","top-10-anime-betrayals","anime-butterfly","attack-on-titan-memes","omae-wa-mou-shindeiru"],"popularityRank":4124,"license":"Meme images and history: templates, screenshots, photos and fan edits, many of copyrighted material or real people.
